Configuration Pane : Outlook Plugins

You can select different plugins to allow Copernic Desktop Search to index Outlook elements such as Emails, Organizers, Contacts and offline PST files. This option is only availible if the Microsoft Outlook Extension is enable in the Extensions Store.

Change the Selected Outlook Plugin:

    • In the Tools menu, click Options...
    • Select the Advanced tab.
    • In the Others section, select the desired element in the Select Outlook Plugin drop down menu.
    • Click Back to main view or Escape key to confirm and close the Options window.
NOTE: THE APPLICATION MUST BE RESTART TO ALLOW THE NEW PLUGIN TO BE FULLY ENABLE. THE OLD OUTLOOK ITEMS INDEXED BY THE LAST PLUGIN WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE INDEX AND MUST BE REINDEX BY THE NEW PLUGIN.

Outlook Plugins Descriptions:

Native Plug-in:

This is the default option when installing Copernic Desktop Search for the first time. The native plug-in is the same indexing method that was used in Copernic Desktop Search 3 and 4 but up to date for the latest versions of Microsoft Outlook. The scanning of Outlook elements is done using the Extended MAPI API and does not requires Microsoft Outlook to be opened to perform indexation.
    Known issues:
    • On a few special configurations, the connection to Outlook may not be working or parsing of folders may be relatively slow, resulting in a slow Copernic Desktop Search initialisation.
    • Listing of mailbox folders in options may not shown every folders if connection is not quick enought (timeout), resulting in missing or grayed out folders in options tree.
    • Indexing of GAL (Global Address List) items is relatively slow compare to other indexing methods.

Outlook Add-in:

The Outlook Add-in is a VSTO (Visual Studio Tools for Office) add-in that runs inside an instance of Microsoft Outlook and allows the .NET Framework code to run directly inside the Outlook process to communicate with Copernic Desktop Search.  This was the default option used in Copernic Desktop Search 6.
    Restrictions:
    • Microsoft Outlook should be running to be able to index and preview Outlook elements.
    • The Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Office Runtime must be installed to run the Add-In. Should be proposed by the CDS installer if not already installed.
    • This add-in does not supports Microsoft Outlook versions lower than 2010.
    Known issues:
    • The add-in may not work correctly on some configurations and may shown an error while starting in Outlook. If this occur, we suggest to use the Native plug-in instead.
    • The communication between the Outlook add-in and Copernic Desktop Search may be dropped if a fault occurred inside the Outlook add-in. A restart of Microsoft Outlook is necessary.
    • The add-in may slow down Microsoft Outlook if the indexation is buzy in full blown.

NetOffice Plug-in:

The NetOffice plug-in uses a .NET library to communicate with Microsoft Office and indexation is done directly inside the Copernic Desktop Search process.  This was the default option used in Copernic Desktop Search 5.
    Restrictions:
    • This add-in does not supports Microsoft Outlook versions lower than 2007.
    Known issues:
    • Since the NetOffice plug-in uses the Outlook Primary Interop Assembly (PIA), the Outlook Trust Center may shown warning messages when CDS indexes Outlook content if the installed antivirus is not up to date.
    • Some crashes may occur at initialisation if the connection fail or issues occurred while parsing mailbox root folders.
    • CDS may crash if the connection with Outlook is lost while indexing.
    • Unable to open items inside PST files if Outlook is close.
    • A rare issue could cause the creation of some default empty folders inside PST files. Those folders are normally hidden of the PST folders list.
