Main Window Overview

Menus offer useful options and commands to configure and customize CDS as well as access to the Online Help. Use the X icon to minimize CDS to the system tray.

Search Box is where you type your keywords. It is possible to browse through your last ten queries by clicking on the arrows found at the end of Search Box.

My Searches, located beside the Search button, allows you to execute a predefined search such as: "Today's emails".

Search Categories below the main search bar, provides the buttons to switch between categories.

The Refine Section is where you can refine the query using the different available filters. You can customize the displayed refinements in the All category using the + or x icons.

Search Results List is the section of the main window that displays the search results.

The Preview Section displays a software-based preview of the selected result.

The Status Bar indicates the current status of the application.

Install Copernic Desktop Search

Perform the following steps to install and quickly configure Copernic Desktop Search:

    • Double-click on the .exe file to start the install of CDS.
    • Select the desired language in the drop list and click Ok.
    • Click Next on the Welcome page.
    • Accept the "End-User License Agreement" and click Next.
    • Choose a location to install CDS and click Next. Note: You can choose to create a shortcut on your desktop.
    • Click on the Install button.
    • Click on the Finish button. Note: You can select to launch the application immediately.

Note: You can also customize various search, results and display settings. In the Menu, click on Tools - Options.

First time use

When you enter Copernic Desktop Search for the first time, the software is in Free version. This version allows you to use Copernic Desktop Search with limited features. If you want to activate more features, such as Outlook emails or cloud files indexing, you must go to the Extensions window, using the Extensions menu item.

The Free version with limited features:

    • Allows you to index up to 25,000 documents on your computer or network drives.
    • Allows you to search content inside text based documents.
    • Allows you to search web browser favorites and history.

The extensions allow you to enable different features to improve your search experience:

Mailer extensions:

Cloud extensions:
    • Google Drive extension allows you to search your files directly in Google Drive.
    • Microsoft OneDrive extension allows you to search your files directly in OneDrive.
    • Dropbox extension allows you to search your files directly in Dropbox.
Complex files extensions:
    • Microsoft Office extension
      • Microsoft Word extension allows you to search text in Microsoft Word and OpenDocuments Text files.
      • Microsoft Excel extension allows you to search text in Microsoft Excel and OpenDocuments Spreadsheet files.
      • Microsoft PowerPoint extension allows you to search text in Microsoft PowerPoint and OpenDocuments Presentation files.
      • Microsoft OneNote extension allows you to search text in Microsoft OneNote files.
    • Adobe PDF extension allows you to search text in Adobe Portable Document Format files.
    • Corel WordPerfect extension allows you to search text in Corel WordPerfect files.
    • EPub extension allows you to search text in EPub (e-book) files.
    • Image Text Recognition extension allows you to search for text content in images files and images inside other complex documents such as PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint OneNote and EPub documents.

Once at least one extension has been purchase, you NEED to import the license key provided by our sale partner Avangate to activate any extension:

Once at least one extension has been activated, Copernic Desktop Search will be in paid version. The paid version enable these functionalities:

    • Custom support.
    • Commercial use.
    • GPO deployment for business.
    • No index limit (25,000 files).

Update Copernic Desktop Search

    • Open the Help menu and click on Check for Software Updates. A dialog box will appear on your screen.
    • If there is a new version available, CDS will ask you if you want to download the update or not.
    • Follow the instructions to install the update. If there are no updates available, click OK to close the dialog box.

Index definition

To quickly find your files & emails, a search engine must create and maintain an index. An index is like a database of all keywords found on your computer. First, CDS searches documents, emails, attachments and multimedia files that are saved on your computer's hard drive. Then, it will scan and extract the files content to create the index. To maintain the index up to date, CDS use real-time indexation features and automatic updates. The index contains multiple informations, such as:

    • File name, folder, location on your computer.
    • Metadata: Title, Date, Author, etc.
    • Content Text (for supported file types)

As soon as your hard drive is completely indexed, CDS will find your file in less than a second. It associates the keyword saved in the index and those in your files. This allows you to launch advanced queries.
